Commissioner of Oaths Services in Scarborough

Swear Your Documents with Confidence

Many legal and government forms require you to “swear” or “affirm” that the contents are true. This cannot be done alone; it must be witnessed by a designated Commissioner of Oaths.

At Notary Lawyer Scarborough, our team includes lawyers who are automatically Commissioners for taking Affidavits in Ontario. We provide a professional, comfortable environment for you to sign your statutory declarations and affidavits.

What Does a Commissioner of Oaths Do?

A Commissioner of Oaths is authorized by the Province of Ontario to administer an oath, affirmation, or solemn declaration. When you sign a document in front of us, you are legally declaring that the information inside is true.

Common documents requiring a Commissioner:

  • Affidavits: Statements used as evidence in court or for insurance claims.

  • Statutory Declarations: For lost passports, proof of residency, or common-law status.

  • Vehicle Transfers: Sworn statements for the “Gift of Vehicle” to a family member (ServiceOntario forms).

  • Professional Applications: Licensing forms for nurses, realtors, or tradespeople.

  • Name Change Applications: Legal declarations required by the government.

Important: Do not sign your document before you arrive. You must sign it in our presence for the stamp to be valid.

Commissioner vs. Notary Public: What’s the Difference?

While the roles often overlap, they are distinct:

Commissioner of Oaths

Restricted to administering oaths and declarations within Ontario. They cannot verify that a document is a "true copy."

Notary Public

Has broader powers, including certifying true copies and verifying documents for international use.

Rest assured: Since we are Notary Lawyers, we hold both titles. Whether you need a simple commissioner stamp or full Notarization Services, we have the authority to handle it.

Our fee is affordable and transparent. We charge $30 for the first document commissioned and offer discounted rates for additional documents.

Generally, no. A Commissioner of Oaths is authorized only for documents staying within Ontario or for specific Canadian government matters. If your document is leaving the province or the country (e.g., USA, Europe), you usually need a Notary Public. Since we are both, we can advise you on which stamp you actually need.

Yes! Ontario law permits remote commissioning. We can meet with you via a secure video call to witness your signature and commission your document digitally. Learn more about our Online Documents Certification process.

We do not need to read the content of your document word-for-word, but we must verify that the document is complete (no blank spaces) and that you understand what you are signing. We are verifying your signature and your oath, not the legal strategy of the content itself.

The stamp itself does not expire, but your document might. Some affidavits (like those for real estate or OSAP) may only be valid for a specific period (e.g., 6 months). Always check with the organization requesting the document.
